10. Disappeared Without a Trace
This happened to me last year and I fully understand why no one believed me because it sounds ridiculous. Every morning, I need to wake up at 5 AM to catch the 5:30 AM bus to the train station to go to university. I had to be there by 8 AM but I like to get there half an hour early. To get to the bus stop, I have to walk down this bike path and under this bridge to get to this quiet backstreet road.
There is zero light on the bike path. This street is dead quiet. The right side of the road is a continuation of the bike path, and the left is a normal footpath with a long green hedge. One morning, I was standing there waiting for a bus and this old woman comes walking out from under the bridge. I didn't see her at first because as I said it was pitch black on the bike path.
She crosses the road and walks up to me. She asked me if I knew where X road was. I turned to point in the direction of the road she was looking for. I turned back and she was gone. This old woman, who was walking at a snail's pace, disappeared within three seconds.
11. A Glitch In The Matrix
This happened when I was in eighth grade. I attended a small private Christian school at the time. School started at 8:00, but my Dad had to work early so he usually would drop me off at about 7:15. I would then go to before-care, where an adult basically supervised everyone who was early. I remember it as an ordinary morning, I felt totally fine and did what I usually did in before-care.
I went to the back corner of the cafeteria, lay my head down on the table, and closed my eyes for a few minutes before my school day began. All of a sudden, everything changed. I started experiencing this sharp pain in my chest, the best I can describe it was it felt like my chest was having a cramp, like you get in your legs when working out or playing sports.
I didn't panic, but I got out of my chair and quickly walked out of the room and down the hallway towards the restroom. As I walked down the hallway, the pain got sharper and sharper and my vision started going dark. The last thing I remember was falling to my knees and realizing I wasn't going to make it to the bathroom.
By the time I was completely on the floor, I was unconscious. I have no idea how long I was out. The next thing I remember, I was waking up on the floor of the hallway, and I quickly realized two things that I to this day find strange about the situation. First, the last thought I had before I passed out was realizing I wasn't going to make it to the bathroom, yet when I woke up, I was actually a few steps past the door to the bathroom. But there was more.
Second, this was near the end of the before-care time period. School was about to start, and the hallway at this point was usually pretty busy, yet when I went to go to the bathroom, the hallway was empty and when I woke up, the hallway was still empty. I went into the bathroom to compose myself and make sure that whatever happened wouldn't start again.
After that, I went back to before-care and on with my day. I felt completely fine and to this day, that pain in my chest has never returned.
12. Lights Out
When I was in my teens, my dad relapsed into his addictions again. It was the last straw for my mom and I, and we took off in the car at night to go for a drive and get out of the house. We were both angrier than we’d ever been. As we drove down the street, each streetlight we passed popped and went dark, for at least three blocks.
At the time, it really felt like our anger was so destructive that it was affecting the world around us. My mom and I still talk about that night and wonder what was going on with those lights. My dad ended up passing at 55, alone in rehab, after lying down for a nap. He didn’t feel well, and nobody took him seriously because he was a junkie.
His heart gave out after years of his lifestyle. He was extremely flawed, but nobody deserves to pass alone and ignored. Take care of yourselves while you can.
13. Sound And Colour
This happened at my grandma's house. I was lying awake on the couch in the middle of the night when this kaleidoscope of colors and lights appeared on the ceiling and began moving around the walls. I silently watched it until it disappeared, and then I went to sleep. I shared the living room with my sister, and my grandma slept in a chair to keep us company.
Since it was dark and I hadn't heard anything, I assumed I was the only one still awake to see it. The next morning, I found out the chilling truth. At the breakfast table, my grandma brought up the "light show" she had seen the night before, and she didn't seem to know what it was. She described what I'd seen perfectly.
After she left the table, my dad and aunt both seemed very concerned that she might be losing her mind. In my little kid brain, I thought if I told them I'd seen it too, they might think the same about me, so I kept quiet about it. If it hadn't been for the fact she'd seen it too, I would've chalked it up to a number of things. But I honestly don't know what to make of it.
14. The Place That Time Forgot
When my grandfather was a boy in the 1950s, he was hunting out in what were then mostly the wilds of New Mexico. He shot a deer across a deep gulley, and the deer fell down onto a rock. Being unable to reach it, he walks back home to get his dad. They get back, get down to the deer, but are unable to clean it because of an oncoming blizzard.
30 odd years later, he went back to the spot with his son, my uncle. The same knife that he'd removed from his belt (and forgotten) laid in the place where he'd left it 30 years before, along with the hide and bones of the deer. I still have that knife; one side of its leather case is severely bleached and dried out. The same thing with the knife's leather grip.
The guy wasn't bluffing when he said no one had laid eyes on that spot in three decades.
15. Highway Of Pain
There were two of the exact same moments. So, I used to hang out with my friends at a local shopping mall pretty often that is a bit far from the city. The only road that connects to the mall is a highway with lots of cars going fast and no sidewalk. Once, when we were in this mall, we had the idea to go to another mall that was closer to the city.
Conveniently, the highway that connects to mall 1 leads directly to mall 2. There was a small problem, though: We didn't have a car and we were pretty short on cash. So we decided to go to mall 2 on foot, through this highway. The distance from the two malls was just shy of 4 miles, so we thought we'd be fine. We were so, so wrong.
We went on our journey to mall 2, walking on the shoulder of the highway on the opposite way, so we'd see the oncoming cars. I also had a flashlight that I used to shine a blinking light into the direction of the drivers, so they'd see us. I was being very careful not to blind anyone, though. I know that it was still very dangerous.
It was nighttime and the wind was blowing pretty hard, and it was very cold, but we were laughing and chatting about all sorts of things, so we were fine. In the middle of the highway between those two malls, there is a huge valley that is well known for being a place where people go to throw bodies away. There were several corpses found in that valley.
We were pretty scared to go through this section of the highway, but we went there anyway. We were a group of four people and we all had knives, so we thought that we'd be fine. We made our way to mall 2 successfully, and then we proceeded to sit somewhere to talk. We sat down and talked about how cool it was to go from mall 1 to mall 2 on foot and that it was a fun experience. But then something strange hit us.
Talking a bit more, we noticed that none of us remembered going through the infamous segment of the highway. We didn't remember anything, and we couldn't even be sure if we went there or not. Still, the only way that we could be at mall 2 was by going through that segment. We then concluded that we must have been distracted and didn't notice that we went there. But scarily enough, that wasn’t the end of the story.
The next day, I was watching the news and saw that a body had been found at that place the night before, at approximately the same time that we were there. I was shocked because we'd have seen all the cars and helicopters there. That's when the craziest thing happened. The TV helicopter footage showed a group of four people, with a blinking flashlight, very near the spot where the body was found.
We had been there, even though we didn't remember. I shared the news story with my friends and we were all pretty stunned. We all went to a neurologist to see if we were okay, which we were. Fast forward six months, to last week. I was at mall 1 with the same friends as before and we decided to go to mall 2, on foot, the same way as before.
Result? Everything went fine, but we still can't remember going through that segment of the highway. No body was found there this time. We decided not to go there anymore.
16. Sympathy Symptoms
I had a few weeks of pregnancy symptoms—I’d been pregnant before and it was exactly the same. So I took some tests and did them daily until eventually, I got weird faint lines on them. One night, I felt so sick with nausea that I had to stay awake next to my open window all night. I knew at this point I was certainly pregnant and I was about to get a positive test soon.
So I tried that morning and it still came up very faint. At this point, I was fed up. I asked my twin if was she unwell lately or anything, and she was like “Yeah, I was up feeling ill all last night, why?” I said I’d been feeling sick a lot lately, and she said "Me too" and sent me a pregnancy scan, telling me it’s early so not to tell anyone…I had my period a couple of days after.
17. The Green Dress
I had a vivid dream of my grandmother in a green dress. Super vivid. She was standing at the bottom of the stairs, looking back at me. The next day, we got the call that she had passed. I was very sad, but we knew it was coming. I said to my family that I had had a dream about her in a green dress. She was beautiful in it. My aunt went white as a sheet.
There were no pictures, but apparently, my grandmother got married in a green dress like the one I described. I had never seen nor heard of it. I was 16 at the time, and we were very close before she passed. I’m 48 now. I am a skeptic but sometimes I wonder about this incident.
18. The Kindness Of Strangers
A woman came into the shop where I used to work. I greeted her with a smile and offered my help if needed. For a good 10 minutes, she kept walking around and looking at me like she knew me. I didn't mind and just did my thing. A few minutes later, by coincidence, I ended up cashing her out. She stared at me the whole time like she was looking through my soul.
Then she said out of nowhere, "Don't ever change who you are." I was so confused when it happened and I still kind of am.
19. Show Me The Money
Seven or eight years ago, I got an email that was something along the lines of, "Hi, this is 'person I don’t know', I'm trying to transfer $3,162.45 into your account but need updated banking info. Please send your new account number so I can send you the money." Obvious scam. But I got this email late at night and I'd been drinking. So I came up with an ingenious plan.
I thought, what can they take with just an account number? Nothing, right? I was broke, and I only had like $200 in the account anyway. I’m going to just give it and see what happens. I check my account the next day, and there’s the $3200. I got the money. I spent the money. Nothing ever happened. I haven’t heard anything else from them since.
The money was real. I got it, I spent it, my bank never said anything, and I still have no idea where it came from, and they never emailed me again or asked for anything else. My real-life Nigerian prince.
20. Child’s Play
When I was nine years old, I was told to clean my room, and then we would go to the local video store to rent a video game for the weekend. I clean my room, my mom approves of the cleaning job, we go to the store and I get my game. The whole trip lasts 20 minutes, tops. We get back, and all my toys are spread out across the floor in neatly organized lines, very deliberate looking.
No one else was in the house. Nothing missing. Just this strange toy issue. My guess is it was a friend of mine either messing with me or looking for something of theirs, but no one ever confessed.
21. Intruder Alert
I woke up to a sound in the darkness. It sounded like a door shutting. At first, I thought it was a dream because I could hear it in the dream as I was waking up, kind of like when someone calls your name when you’re dreaming. But then I looked at my cat and his hair was completely standing up and he was beaming at my bedroom door.
This was the moment when I got really scared because I know animals can pick up on that stuff and I thought he might know something’s wrong. My cat doesn’t do this type of thing unless a dog is in the room. So I looked over at the door and the only way I can describe it is it looked like it was swaying, slowly, like it was breathing, like someone was standing on the other side of it trying to hear if I was awake.
This swaying was accompanied by a shadow. I don’t mean a supernatural shadow, but it looked like the shadow of a person behind the door. I was paralyzed with fear. I lied there for five minutes, naked, watching this door sway. I considered yelling and trying to scare them away but I was terrified someone might respond.
I legitimately thought this was the moment where I would have to defend myself. I don’t own anything to defend myself with but after 10 minutes or so I mustered up the courage to check every room in the house. I checked every corner too. But there was no one there. I don’t know what happened, but my evolutionary traits kicked in and I completely believed someone was outside my door.
22. Don’t Mind Her
I spent one summer in high school living with my aunt and uncle and watching their seven-year-old daughter for them during the day while they worked. I was up late one night watching TV in the living room. The living room was right off of the kitchen, separated only by an L shaped bar. I saw my cousin, out of the corner of my eye, walk down the hallway from her room into the kitchen.
It was way past her bedtime, so I told her she needed to go back to bed. When I didn’t hear her answer, I got up and walked around the bar and into the kitchen. There was no one there. I checked under the bar to see if she was hiding from me, and there was no one there, and nowhere else she could’ve gone from the kitchen.
I walked down the hallway to her room, and she was fast asleep, snoring, so there was no way it was her. It baffled me, and freaked me out, because if I didn’t see my cousin, who was the little girl that walked into the kitchen? Several years later, I was talking to my aunt and she nonchalantly brings up the ghost in her house.
I laughed it off and she said, “No, I’m serious. We have a ghost. Your uncle and I both have seen her and heard her. We call her Giggles, because we hear her giggling. We usually only see her in the hallway before she disappears.” All of a sudden, I remembered the disappearing girl in the kitchen. I asked her what her ghost looked like.
She said she had blonde hair with braids and wore a white dress. My cousin is blonde. On the night in question, I thought I’d seen my cousin in a nightgown walk down the hallway, but apparently it was the ghost that resides in my aunt’s house.
23. Visitor Pass
I had to be about nine years old and my school bus stop was right across the street from my house. The street itself had a bit of a hill to it, and where my house was is where the street started to level off. So, I cross to the other side from my driveway, which put the bus stop maybe 20 yards away. As I'm walking toward it, a man dressed in all white with suit/vest/fedora circa 1930s starts to crest the hill, walking toward me.
As we start to pass one another, he tips his hat, says good morning to me using my name, and tells me not to worry, she will be ok, and keeps walking. I just kind of freeze for a moment because "stranger danger." A moment or two later, I turn around to look at him but, as you probably have guessed, he was just gone. Nowhere.
When I got home from school, I learned that my Nana had passed. I assume that was what this...whatever...was conveying; that I shouldn't worry because she is ok where she is.
24. Saved by the Nightmare
My wife, kids, and myself were in the car together, driving by some cliffs near where we live. We stopped to take in the view and snap some photos. I lined the kids up with the cliff drop and ocean behind them and took some pictures. As they took a step back for me to get a better picture, they fell off the edge of the cliff.
I woke up sweating and petrified. The nightmare felt so real, one of those that really sticks with you. I went for a pee and checked in on all the kids, all fast asleep in bed, apart from my five-year-old daughter. She was on the floor—she had fallen out of bed but somehow was still sleeping. Next to her on the floor, knocked over I assume when she fell, was a bedside lamp.
The bulb from the lamp was singeing into the carpet, I think ready to burst into flames.
25. Nothing Out of the Ordinary
My friend's grandma's house was right up against a cemetery. He always told me it was haunted and would see crazy stuff there but I never believed him. One night, we were over at her house and I swear, I saw something the size of a toddler run from the living room, through the dining room, and into the kitchen. When I looked at my friend he just went, “Did you just see that kid run through the house?”
It looked more like a fast running shadow than an actual person. There was no one there. There were no kids around—it was his grandma’s house and we were the only ones over. It was late at night and no doors were open or closed. When we told his grandma, she was just like, “Oh don't worry about it. It happens all the time.” After that, I started believing in ghosts.
My friend also said that when he used to sleep there, he would push the spare room's television away from him, making sure that it faced a different direction, all because he would wake up at night and see people in the reflection staring back out at him and watching him sleep. It scared the ever-loving heck out of him.
26. Don’t Go in the Basement
I work the night shift at a hospital and during the night it's fairly common for us to run out of particular supplies that we need. During the day, there is normally a worker from central supply who you can call and they'll bring up what you need directly to your floor. But at night, we don't have that luxury so we often have to go down and get it ourselves.
Central supply is in the basement of this hospital that has been around since the 40s, so it's creepy enough. I had heard stories about how creepy it was and people getting uneasy feelings while down there alone. I was naive and didn't really believe it until one night I had to go down there by myself. The place is huge and dimly lit with rows of shelves of hospital supplies everywhere.
I'm in the middle of these shelves looking for what I need when I just start to feel a shiver run through my entire body. The hair on my neck is standing up and I just get this feeling of complete dread, like I'm not supposed to be there. Then, all of a sudden, I see this black figure dart past me out of the corner of my eye.
At first, I thought I was just seeing things because it was like 3 AM and I was tired, so I brushed it off. I go to leave and suddenly I hear a huge crash behind me. A variety of supplies were wiped completely off the shelf and all over the floor and in the corner of the room, I just see this black figure like thing standing there.
Every hair on my body is standing up at this point and I get my butt out of that place as fast as possible. I came back to my floor and all but one of my coworkers thought I was bluffing. The only one who believed me saw my face and without me saying anything said to me, "You saw it too, didn't you?" Yeah, I never went down in the basement ever again.
27. Doppelganger Ghost
Not quite sure how young I was at the time, but I was probably between five and eight. I was in my babysitter’s bed at the time in her trailer park. It was 3:00 AM and I had woken up because I had to pee. When I woke up, I looked down the hallway to see my babysitter leaning against the wall like the stereotypical cool guys do in movies.
I made eye contact and I felt my body go cold because she was still sound asleep next to me in bed. I went under the blankets trying to hide and when I looked back she was gone. I didn’t want to sound crazy so I’ve never told anyone. I just sat in her bed watching infomercials until 6:00 AM when she woke up. Never even thought about sleeping there again.
I honestly forgot how much this affected me until I started writing this. Really freaked me out, man.
28. She Was Right Here, I Swear!
I was walking to class from the dining hall on my campus when I saw a lady yelling for help and banging on a window in a nearby building. Lots of people were walking past but I was the only one who seemed to acknowledge it. I went to the window to help and she told me she was locked in a room in the building and that she needed me to come in and open the door.
Now, I don't know the layout of this building at all, so I had no clue where she was located. I decided it would be best to call campus security for help, despite her desperate pleas for me not to call them and to just let her out. I call them, and when I hear them coming, I go to greet them so I can take them over to the window.
I leave for maybe a maximum of 15 seconds and when I return with campus security, she is gone. We can't see her at the window and campus security goes inside to double-check and sure enough, there is no trace of her. Campus security definitely thought I was crazy and I'm sure my professor thought I was full of it when I explained to him why I was late.
No one seems to believe me that this happened but I swear it did.
29. If It Wasn’t You…
My sister and I both slept upstairs in separate rooms on opposite ends of a short hallway. It was only our two bedrooms on the top floor. I’d often hear typing on a keyboard and/or soft steps walking down the hall to the stairs in the middle of the night. It was so natural and clear sounding that I never questioned it.
It was during the time when MSN was popular and I just figured my sister was up past her bedtime chatting or had to use the bathroom, which was downstairs. This went on for all of my childhood, with me not thinking anything of it. I moved out of my parents' house around 10 years ago now and a couple of years ago, my sister and I were chatting.
She brought up that I kept her up with my constant keyboard clacking and trips to the bathroom at night. Turns out, we had been hearing the same noises at night growing up and assumed it was the other one making them. We both felt the same way about the noises, almost nostalgic and certainly not threatened.
30. Hello, Old Friend
When I worked in hospice, I took care of a sweet man who saw his wife before he passed. Except she had been gone for five years. He was wheelchair-bound, but the night he passed, he was up and walking. He kept insisting his wife was coming to get him. When the nurse and I got him settled into his room for the umpteenth time, he looked at the empty doorway and whispered four words that still haunt me.
He said: "Oh, girls, she's here.” Then he went unresponsive and passed about an hour later.
31. Home Evil Home
I used to sleep over at my grandparents’ a lot when I was a teen, and even though I grew up in their home I was always afraid to sleep in their living room because I always felt a scary presence. One night I was falling asleep on their couch with my back to the room when I heard a dragging noise from right behind me that lasted several seconds.
I was alone, and it scared the absolute bejeesus out of me. It took a few minutes for me to be able to turn around, I was so scared. When I finally did, I saw that the heavy redwood coffee table had been dragged like a foot across the floor. I could see the tracks in the carpet. If it weren't for those tracks, I would have dismissed it as sleep paralysis.
The last time I went to that house was right before my grandma passed. She was in the hospital and I took her electric wheelchair back to her house. I didn't see anything, but from the moment I entered the driveway, everything felt wrong. When I did go into the house, I had a crushing, overwhelming sense that if I didn't leave now, that presence was going to hurt me, and badly.
I literally ran out the front door and didn't look back. I inherited the house and was glad to sell it. I don’t know why, but I swear it didn't like me.
32. The Wrath Of God
When I was a kid, I woke up to three women standing outside my window. I lived in the country, so I don't know how or why they were there. They were nuns. Two in red, one in white, with others behind them. I had never seen nuns before in my life. I jumped out of bed and started screaming at the old women in my window.
My mom ran in, but she didn't see them. I didn't sleep there that night, and I moved to the living room instead. The next day, there were signs of trampling through the bushes and flattened grass under my window. It's been about 25 years, and I still remember the eerie faces looking at me with anger and scrutiny. I don't know who they were.
33. Call In The Cavalry
When I was five, my family owned a huge ranch in the middle of nowhere. Around 7 pm, we were out on the property while my mom was back at the house. Suddenly, we heard the loudest noise I’ve ever heard in my life. I looked up in the sky and saw a huge silver-colored ball falling from the sky. I started grabbing at my dad’s shirt and pointing up.
I tried to yell, but it was SO loud he couldn’t hear me. He threw me in the truck and we raced back to the house. As we drove up, we saw my mom on the porch, shaking. We knew she had witnessed the same thing. We went inside and my parents immediately got on the phone and called the sheriff’s office.
They also called family, friends, and anyone they could think of for help. While they were on the phone with my grandpa about half an hour later, we heard another LOUD noise. Like a thousand explosions going off at the same time. We got back in the truck and started driving to the front of the ranch, still on the phone. That’s when things got truly weird.
As we got closer, we heard what sounded like large machinery at the gate. Sure enough, at the entrance of our property, we were met with two 18-wheelers and at least five black, unmarked SUVs. A man stepped out and demanded access to the property. So my parents opened the gate, they all drove in, the man got back out and told us to leave.
At this point, my mom was still talking to granddad, who heard all this happening. He very sternly told mom that we should do as they said. So we had to drive around doing nothing, questioning and panicking for over an hour. When we finally got back to our front gate, we saw all the vehicles leaving, but the 18-wheelers now had black tarps covering whatever was underneath.
That was it. We went back in the house in complete silence. We hugged each other, and went to bed. Never found a crash site, nothing left behind, no one ever contacted us, nothing.
34. On to the Next One
When I was around nine or 10, this guy who looked about 40 kept appearing in every single public place I was in. With my parents or not, he was there. At the store? Yes, he was there, and he bought everything me and my family bought. In school? Yes, he was staring at me on the other side of the school gate. Out in the city? Yes, following me in the streets.
I told my parents so many times and they just ignored me and said I need to stop believing everything my brother says—since my brother was really into creepy stuff at the time, he was 14. One day this guy just disappeared. The next thing I knew, one of my friends kept seeing the guy everywhere. She many times pointed out that the guy was outside the school gate watching her.
I never saw him on the other side of the gate. Then she told me the guy disappeared after a few weeks. Then, this other kid started telling everyone about the guy following him. About seven months passed and I moved to another town. Still gives me creeps.
35. Water Under The Bridge
This was maybe four years ago. I’d been drinking with my best friend at his place and was on the late bus home. I must have nodded off somewhere along the way, because the next thing I know, the bus driver is berating me for sleeping on the bus—I’d been sitting in a dark corner so he hadn’t seen me, and had taken the bus back to the depot for the night.
This was some two miles outside the city and even further away from home, and at 3 am I was getting ready for a long walk. My fiancée was in a different time zone, so I called her to keep me company as it was only evening for her. As I’m slowly making my way towards the city, using the skyline for orientation, things are starting to look familiar.
It’s not a part of town I visit often, but I know my way around. There’s a train station with a railway bridge overhead. It’s going towards 4 am now, so there aren’t any trains running. I pass underneath it and keep walking, thinking I should be home in an hour or so. Then I find myself approaching the railway bridge again.
I’m thinking, okay, I’m still a little tipsy, I must have gotten turned around somehow and taken a few wrong turns, but it’s still weird I wound up in the same spot, coming from the same direction. I keep walking. But some time later, I end up walking towards the darn bridge again. At this point I’m a little shaken, and tell my fiancée I must be out of it as I keep getting lost and ending up in the same spot.
She says she couldn’t tell from my voice, and to use my maps app from here on out. Which I do. I swear I have no idea how, because I put in my home address and was stubbornly following that little arrow, but 20 minutes later I look up and see the railway bridge again. At this point, I’m just trying to keep myself together.
It’s past 4 am now, several hours since I had my last drink, and I’m feeling sober and freaked out. I decide to take a different route than I’d been trying before, defying my app and going down some streets I’ve definitely never seen before. At this point, it’s getting late for my fiancée too, and I tell her to get ready for bed and that I’ll figure it out somehow.
For some reason, pretending to her that I’m not worried about being stuck in some weird loop helps. Finally, I start seeing familiar landmarks again. Only this time, I’m in a spot several miles outside of town, surrounded by nothing but fields and the occasional outlet store. I have no clue how I ended up here, as it’s miles out from what I could have realistically walked in an hour, but I’m just happy to have made it.
It’s now after 5 am, and the first busses are running, and I’m finally able to get home. When I think and talk about that night, I still say “Haha, remember how I was walking home and got so lost it took me more than three hours?” Even so, I still get an uneasy feeling any time I’m near that railway bridge to this day.
36. Straight From a Horror Movie
I was getting on the elevator in the metro. To get from the train platform to the main platform with the turnstiles and exit, you have to take the elevator. So I got on with this older guy. It was just the two of us. I glanced over and this guy was watching me. Pointedly. And he was smiling, but not in a nice, welcoming way.
You know, in the cliché creepypastas where they talk about monsters with “unnaturally wide smiles”? That's exactly the kind of smile this guy had. Anyway, I looked away from him because I thought he was just crazy or something. But out of the corner of my eye, I saw him making these weird gestures all over his chest. It almost looked like he was making the sign of the cross or something.
Finally, the elevator doors opened and we both got off and walked towards the turnstiles. I swiped my card to exit and then turned around to see if this dude was following me. And he was—gone. There was nowhere else he could have gone. We were at the only exit for the station. Unless he turned back, ran, and got on another elevator in about four seconds.
I just...don't know. I don't know where he went. Anyway. I'm from a small town and sometimes weird things happen in the city that I don't quite understand, but I just chalk it up to me being practically a redneck. But this was really out there. And it's been bothering me. Anyway. There we go. That's all. Thanks for reading.
37. Can’t Get Rid of It That Easily
My mom runs an antique business and has for years. I've worked with her on various occasions, often changing between working the shop with her and doing construction with my dad. For a while, she ran her business a few towns over with my best friend's dad, and the business was OK, but didn't make enough to support the both of them.
Well, a few years back, she sold her ownership to him, and just boxed up some of her things from the shop to bring home. My dad, however, surprised her and rented her a building in our hometown so she could run her OWN shop. She quickly brought everything there and began unpacking. While unpacking, I found an old Ouiji board from an estate sale she had bought out.
I showed her, we joked about the creepiness of it, and she said when she'd gotten it, her coworker had jokingly played with it to tease her—our family isn't super religious, but we ain't about tempting demons. She thought he'd thrown it away, but apparently he'd snuck it into her stuff as a final prank. So, we laughed, and she tossed it in the garbage pile.
A few months later, I was running the front desk when she brought a box of antiques to price down from the attic. We began going through it and what happened to be in the bottom of the box? The Ouiji board, still in its cardboard case, with a planchette underneath. I recognized it as the same one—the box had the same tears and dents I remembered.
Mom and I looked at each other, and after much debating, threw it away—again. Well, in about 2017, mom stopped opening the shop—we weren't making too much while open—and instead started buying out estate sales or helping them run it, then buying what was left over to take to the shop, which we still owned. It became a storage house for antiques she hoped to one day sell.
This last week—May 20, I believe—she asked me to help buckle down and clear out damaged junk from the shop. We began going through boxes and boxes and moving them to a trailer to take to a garage sale location. As I was shuffling a box through to the back area to load it, I heard my mother shout, "No. WAY." I thought maybe she'd been bitten by a spider or found something valuable, so I set the box down and rushed back to her. What I saw sent a chill down my spine.
In the back room where she was, the back wall was lined with shelves, and there were clothing racks and boxes of clothes stacked in front of it. After moving the boxes, the shelves were in clear view. Most were cluttered with knick-knacks or such. But on the bottom shelf, centered and all alone, there sat a familiar board game sized cardboard box.
We stared at it, then each other. Neither of us said a word. We pulled it out and sure enough, it was the SAME DAMNED BOX. The corners were torn. The sides were scratched. Same one. I'd seen it thrown out twice before, yet here it was. We tried to tell my dad, but he isn't superstitious. My brother didn't believe us. They assume it's a separate game, and part of me wants to think so too.
But I've seen that box too closely too many times. I know it's the same one.
38. Rockabye
I was a little kid recording in the under-stairs closet. The light switch was all the way in the back of the closet. When I flipped it, I turned around and saw a shadow on the wall of someone sitting in a rocking chair. I stood stark still, and they began rocking. They slowly rocked faster, and eventually, the chair began swinging like a pendulum as it rocked.
They swung into one of the dark corners of the closet where their shadow should’ve disappeared, but I could still see it I ran the heck out of there and showed my parents the recording. They tried to play it off, but I think they were concerned by it, too. And then it got creepier. A few weeks later, the recording was gone, but all the other videos were still there.
39. Something Bad Is Happening
This past summer, I scheduled with my husband that I would take our two dogs on a very long walk down the beach once I got home from work, then he could pick me up on his way home from work. About a half-hour into the walk, just before he would have finished work, I was hit with a wave of extreme fear, anxiety, and nervousness.
The thought “Something bad is happening” kept repeating over and over again in my head just out of nowhere. I stopped and examined my surroundings for wildlife, other people, anything that could be telling me over and over again “Something bad is happening.” No animals around, not even seagulls or other birds, which are usually always at the beach.
No cars in the road next to the beach. No people anywhere on the beach despite it being a really nice day and people regularly working or exercising or playing on the beach. No boats out despite people regularly working on boats just off shore. It even felt like the ocean waves were silent. I pulled out my phone to see if there was just SOMETHING going on because I felt super paranoid that something bad was happening all of a sudden.
No texts, no news alerts, nothing. So we continued on down the road. The dogs and I made it to 6 pm, about three miles into the walk. We had about a mile until I would be in an area of houses that was where my husband was supposed to pick us up. On the north side of the road, I spotted a herd of wildlife about a mile away up this other road and decided not to proceed forward anymore, as they are not friendly to dogs and seemed to be moving our direction.
So we turned back towards the water. I sat on a log to take a break and give the dogs some water, hoping I’d spot my husband’s car on the road. We started off again and stopped at a washout a few minutes later so the dogs could walk and play in it. I then got a call from my husband that something had happened at work and he’d be on his way as soon as possible so for me to just rest with the dogs wherever I’m at.
I said not to worry, and that I’d start heading back because the wildlife was nearby, and he could just pick us up wherever he sees us. By 7 pm, the dogs were exhausted so we were moving slow but only had a mile left so we were enjoying our time. We all needed the exercise and sunshine. My husband’s co-worker then called me with chilling news.
He tells me that there was an accident near my husband’s place of work at about 5:30 pm, and he was a first responder to the scene. It was the first time he had ever performed CPR on someone, and the individual had passed on before my husband found him. The dogs and I made it home about a half-hour later and a few minutes after that my husband came home.
My husband was messed up for weeks afterward and still is dealing with some trauma and grief from it. 5:30 pm is when I got that overwhelming feeling of fear and felt like the whole world around me was completely silent and my brain repeated “something bad is happening.” The feeling of the silence and the emptiness of the sea and beach and roads around me felt like I didn’t exist all of a sudden or that I wasn’t in this world anymore.
I don’t know how else to explain it and I can’t explain the whole thing other than coincidence.
40. It’s All in the Reflexes
This was four years ago. As I was walking on the sidewalk on a busy afternoon, I saw a suspicious boy/man who was about 18 years old. He was 10 meters away and walking what appeared to be towards me. I kept my eyes on him despite the fact that he wasn’t looking directly at me. His eyes were roaming, jumping from object to object.
As we approached one another, half a meter away from each other, he takes out a knife and tries to stab me in my left side. He wasn’t really fast, so I easily dodged it and immediately turned to see who he was, or if he was trying to stab me again. To my surprise, he continued walking, and after couple of meters, he stopped, turned around, smiled and gave me a thumbs up, then continued walking in the opposite direction.
To this day, I don’t know who he was or what he wanted and even my family doesn’t believe me, because “if someone wanted to stab you, you can‘t stop him. You aren’t experienced enough to dodge it like that,” or something to that effect.
41. It Has Its Eyes on You
Fishing on Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park with a good friend, about 50 feet from shore. Around 8:30 PM, I see glowing red eyes. Up in the trees. Like, red—like the Predator, I guess. I do a double-take—they are gone. I decide not to say anything, maybe I'm trippin'. Did just smoke up. Nope. Five minutes later my buddy says, “I just seen some glowing red eyes up in the top of those trees.”
I feel goosebumps. “Yup, I saw them too.” We look back and they are gone. We decide to aim the boat towards the shoreline. It's not dark yet but the sun is going down. We saw nothing. No owls, no goats in the trails. We didn't get off the boat but we had a good look around. When I ask him about it—this was around 10 years ago—he just says he doesn't want to talk about it. I can't blame him.
But after all these years, I've never heard or seen anything like those glowing red eyes, 30 to 40 feet up in the trees. Staring at us. I copied and pasted this next part (I knew nothing about the history when we went fishing there, by the way). “For more than 100 centuries, people hunted and camped along the original shores of Lake Minnewanka. The Stoney people called it 'Minn-waki' or 'Lake of the Spirits.' They respected and feared this lake for its resident spirits. The Early Europeans called it Devil's Lake."
I used to go camping there. I do not anymore. Mostly because it's bear country for most of the summer. But yeah, also because of those bright red eyes. I will never forget that. Most surreal thing I've ever seen.
42. Dizzy Spell
I once knocked on my brother's door, and got the feeling you get after a darn good stretch when you leave the universe for a second, but multiplied by like 50. When I got my vision back, the bookshelf that was behind me was destroyed (I think I fell into it) and then my brother opened the door. So it took place within like a few seconds, so I don't think I fainted, but it was just really confusing.
43. Believe It Or Not
I was in a car with my grandparents on our way back home from a road trip. I was casually watching random cars go by on the opposite side of the highway and whatnot, and then suddenly in my peripherals, I saw something that caught my attention...It was an RV/mobile home and it was literally ROLLING over and over sideways.
It must have rolled two or three times and then it came to a stop, upright, on its four wheels. I kind of gasped and tried to describe what I saw to my grandfather, but he didn't really pay much attention to me. I remember my grandmother looking back through the back window and saying, "It looks fine." I guess they didn't believe me. They didn't even slow down. I have no idea how it happened, what happened to the people, or anything. I think about it every few months.
44. When One Door Closes
Let me preface this by saying that I’ve never believed in ghosts. To help you understand the situation fully, you should know that I lived in a condo with a front door inside of a building. It was essentially an empty hall, so everything echoed in that area. About a month after my dad passed, I dealt with my first ever “paranormal” experience.
I’m sitting in my living room, the only one awake, when I hear the front door SLAM open. I got up to check what happened and saw that the deadbolt was still in the locked position and the door was wide open. No one had come in or left. It was just...open. Every time I think back to it, I can’t explain it. No wind in our empty hall of doors, no people in sight, there was nothing.
45. He Needed to Know How It Ends
It was a warm summer morning back when I was a kid. I was standing in our hallway putting on my shoes when I randomly peeked into our living room and saw a see-through male figure surrounded by this rainbow-colored light standing right smack in the middle of the living room. He was reading a book and didn't seem to notice me.
I thought it was weird but I didn't feel scared or anything. It felt like the room was filled with a warm, loving energy if that makes sense. I kind of just shrugged it off and went about my day, probably because I was too young to really understand what I'd seen. A few days later, when my mom tucked me into bed, she read me a bedtime story about a kid who meets an angel or something like that, don't remember the story exactly but what was interesting is the author's description of what that angel looked like.
It was exactly the same as the strange rainbow man I had seen in our living room a couple of days before. It even said that angels will often visit humans surrounded by strong, rainbow-colored lighting and manifest themselves while reading a book. I casually blurted out, “Oh, I've seen an angel then!” and my mom was like, “You have? That's great!”
We didn't talk more about that for a while, until one day when I randomly asked my mom if I could see a picture of my grandfather who passed on unexpectedly while my mom was pregnant with me. She found an old family album and we looked through pictures of my parents' wedding that happened exactly one year before I was born.
There was a picture of three or four people sitting together, laughing and having a great time at the party. I immediately pointed out the guy who sat in the middle and said, “How funny! He looks just like the angel I saw!!” My mom's face turned white as a ghost. She was just about to tell me that this was indeed my deceased grandfather who I never got to meet.
I'm very convinced it was him visiting me.
46. Nun on the Loose
I went to a non-religious high school in the United Kingdom. I was always a nerdy kid and the teachers always liked me, so I often got given tasks like delivering papers to other teachers or to bring sick kids to the nurse. Basically, little jobs which meant I was walking around the school occasionally outside of class times.
For about a month or so, I kept seeing this nun walking around the school grounds when nobody else was around. I'd get back to class and tell my mates, but they all thought I was taking joking around with them. I asked a few of the teachers, and they just openly laughed at me, saying we don't have nuns at the school (obviously I knew that).
It became a massive running joke with a lot of people in my class that I was the weirdo who kept seeing nuns who weren't really there. I even saw the nun when I was with my friends once and pointed her out and then she WALKED AROUND THE CORNER. My friend just missed her and we couldn't find her after running after the nun.
One girl later said she also saw the nun but still, people didn't believe me. Over 10 years later and I'm still bitter.
47. Locked Up
An old lady was tapping on the window to get our attention from a room on the second floor. When I walked up to the building, I yelled up at her, asking what was wrong. I could see her mouthing words, but she wasn’t yelling—it seemed like she was speaking normally, as if there wasn’t a window and 20 feet in between us.
After a couple of minutes, I found out that she was trapped inside a room on the second floor. I immediately assumed the worst and figured that she was being held against her will. I didn’t see any cars in the driveway, so I decided I would go in. Before I went into the house though, I had my cousin get his cell phone out and dial 9-1-1, ready to hit send and complete the call should anything happen. I enter the building.
The door opened to a dark, concrete hallway with old, dusty children’s toys that looked like they were from the 70s—rocking horse, red wagon, etc.—bunched up along the left wall. There were no other doors that I could see, only a spiral staircase at the end of the hallway. I started to climb the stairs and as I reached the second floor, I saw her.
The old lady that was tapping on the window was now sitting in a rocking chair watching some show on a very small black and white TV. The door to this room seemed more like the front door to a house than an interior door—it had glass panels from top to bottom. At this point I was very confused—three minutes ago she was saying she was locked in this room, now she’s just watching TV?
I knock on the door and she responds, “Come in.” As I turn the handle and go to open the door, I notice that it is, in fact, locked. But, there's no deadbolt, and I’m turning the knob completely, so I know that it can't be locked. By now, the lady is standing right in front of me on the other side of the door, trying to open it as well.
That is when I stepped back, and noticed a large screwdriver jammed into the floorboards on my end of the door, keeping the door from opening. Someone locked this woman in the room from the outside with a screwdriver. My mind is racing at this point. I make one quick attempt to pull the screwdriver out, but I couldn’t get it.
I tell her I’m going to get help. I get out of that building real quick and tell my cousin to call law enforcement. They show up and surround the building, weapons drawn, and then they enter. As they’re entering, a car pulls into the driveway. A couple gets out of the car, trying to figure out what was going on. It turns out that this lady was their mother/mother-in-law and she suffered from dementia.
Every time they left the house, they would lock her in that room to prevent her from wandering off. After reading about the issue, I found that it’s a fairly common—albeit illegal—thing people in this situation do.
48. Midnight Visitor
This is sort of ongoing, as I still sleepwalk and sleep talk. My roommate says that for the past couple of months, I've been mentioning “a man” who I guess I see while I'm sleeping. He said one night, I was pointing to the open closet and saying that he was there...Apparently, I've been mentioning him quite frequently.
It makes me sort of uneasy, since I have no memory of what I do or say when I sleepwalk. Also, I've been having some really bizarre dreams the last few nights.
49. Intruder Alert
My husband works with clients doing trauma and healing type work, often via Skype or Zoom. Years ago, he had a client session, so went into the living room where he usually did his calls. I went into our bedroom and shut the door and was going to spend the hour working on my laptop. About 20 minutes in, I suddenly got this weird skin-crawling feeling
I looked up from my laptop—and saw a bone-chilling sight. There was a man who was kind of hologram fuzzy, like there but not there. He walked into my room with what looked like a shot wound to his head. I told my husband about it, and the story somehow got worse. As it turns out, the woman he was just working with had lost her husband five months prior.
He was in the service and had returned from combat with severe PTSD. He eventually took his own life. Yes, by a shot to the head.
50. Doing God’s Work
I worked for a company that had maybe 250 employees. Two of them, whom I didn’t know very well, were in a car accident because the guy fell asleep driving and his fiancé, the passenger, perished. He wasn’t able to work anymore and never came back. I eventually left the company and moved to the other end of the state.
After a couple of years, I started thinking about this guy. Like intensely, like I had a memo in my brain I kept snoozing, but it would pop up again. I kept thinking, “I have to tell this guy he needs to do the Lord’s work.” Oddly specific, right? Now, I’m not super religious. I’m more of a spiritual agnostic. But I could not shake this feeling that I was obligated somehow to tell this guy what his future should hold.
Let me reiterate—we were not close at work. I barely knew him, maybe said hi twice a week. So one day I’m back in my old hood and I went to my old work, which was in retail. I’m shopping with a friend who had gone around the corner to get something. Out of nowhere, the guy I used to work with comes walking by. I’m sure my mouth fell open.
I wasn’t sure how to greet him since the last time we’d spoke he was engaged. So I just said hi and then I was like, “So this may sound weird, but for like the last six months I’ve been feeling like I’m supposed to tell you that you’re supposed to work for God. Sorry if that’s too strange!” The second I said it, he went incredibly pale.
His eyes bugged out and he was like, “What?” He turned to the person he was with and said, “Did you hear what she just said??” Inside I was like, this is getting awkward. He legit started crying and he was like, “Thank you! Thank you so much! Can I hug you?” So after a moment, he told me after he left the company, he’d studied and got a well-paying job that he enjoyed, but kept feeling like he was missing something.
Recently, for the first time since the accident, he’d gone back to church. He’d been offered a big promotion that would have moved him across the country, but he thought he really wanted to go to seminary school and become a pastor. Apparently, he’d asked God to guide him. I was like, “OKAY...so, that’s all I’ve got. Good luck, hope things work out!” and went to find my friend.
51. Don’t Be A Stranger
My friends and I used to hang out at this coffee shop almost every single night for years. There were six of us. One summer, this guy "Isaac" started showing up every night. He was around our age and was from out of state, staying with his grandparents for the summer. He became part of our group, playing board games with us and talking until like 2 am.
He would walk to the coffee shop and I'd give him a ride back to his grandparents' house at the end of the night. At the end of the summer, he went back home and we never heard from him again, as this was pre-social media. Maybe about five years later, after our group had mostly grown apart and we were reuniting while everyone was in town for a holiday, we were sitting at our coffee shop reminiscing.
I brought up Isaac, saying, "I wonder what happened to him." Their responses made my blood run cold. Nobody knew who I was talking about. I even have a photo of him, which I eventually found and emailed everyone, but nobody recognized him. Not a single person. It's now been over a decade, and still, nobody remembers Isaac but me.
52. The Ring
I have this ring that my mom had given to me. It used to be my late grandmother's. It was too big for me to wear on my finger, so I put it on a chain and wore it like a necklace. I remember being in class and playing with it while doing my schoolwork, and it was still around my neck the whole time. At the end of the day, when school had let out and everyone was heading home, I realized I didn't have it around my neck anymore.
I panicked and ran back to class and tried retracing my steps, but never found it. I was really upset that I had lost this ring. When I got home and entered my bedroom, I saw the ring and chain placed neatly on the center of my pillow. It looked as if someone had placed it there.
53. The Lady In The Window
About three weeks ago, I was in the middle of being dumped by my now ex-girlfriend, while in my car in front of her house. We both stopped talking for a second and noticed a lady walking her dog towards us. We notice the lady is walking irregularly, like...not stumbling type walking, but rather with seemingly uneven strides and with frequent but subtle pauses in her motion.
It was almost as if she were getting used to the Earth’s gravity. She passes my car in this fashion and we both watch as she begins to round the edge of the cul de sac when she stops in the center of it. She then bends over and places a hand on the ground. After a moment, she returns to walking in that weird glitchy way.
She is now heading in our direction again and this time on the same side of the street. My ex hands me her pepper spray that she keeps on her as the woman approaches the rear of my car, and I say, “get down and hide” so we can hopefully avoid any confrontation. However, my ex refuses to do so and simply keeps watching the lady as she meanders past my car.
I wait about a minute, my ex says my name, and I raise my head to the window only, to be greeted with what I can honestly say was the most horrific expression I have ever seen. It was worn by that woman just on the other side of the glass. It was a mix of many emotions in her eyes, including anger, fear, confusion, and weirdest of all, disapproval.
Though she wasn’t looking directly at me, she was looking at my ex. She was scared too, I was unnerved, and the lady just...she just stared for a solid minute before continuing her stagger down the road with her dog who seemed none the wiser. I’m glad the dog was happy, and I’m glad that the situation wasn’t any worse.
54. Pranked by a Ghost
Had my laptop in my bed just before going to sleep—not plugged in, on battery. Made an offhand comment on some website about how I wasn’t scared of ghosts and didn’t believe in them. Then I turned it off and went to sleep with the laptop beside me in my bed. Next morning, when I try to power it on, nothing happens. But the laptop feels unusually light.
That’s when I realized the battery had been physically removed and placed in the kitchen. I was alone in my apartment and do not have a history of sleepwalking at all.
55. Music To My Ears
When my dad was 12 or so, he was walking through his family's hayfield with a friend. He had a small metal harmonica that the friend was playing with. Predictably, the friend drops it and dad assumes it's gone forever. 38 years later, my dad and I are walking through the same field. Guess what I spot laying in the grass.
The harmonica still played nicely and looked basically new, aside from the metal outside being squished in from a tractor tire.
56. Frights On A Plane
My family took a trip from Australia to the US in 1997; I was quite young at the time. On the flight home, we had to sit separately, so I sat with my dad while my mom and brother sat elsewhere. Midflight, I had to use the bathroom. Dad was sleeping, so I climbed over him and made my way to the middle where the toilets were.
There was a line, so I joined and waited. While I waited, this impeccably dressed woman wearing a red suit was there. She had lipstick and dark hair. She wasn’t an attendant; we flew Qantas and back then they wore navy, I believe. She started to run my ponytail through her fingers and was kind of petting me like a mother would.
She commented how pretty I was. I was a shy kid, so I just stood there politely. When it was my turn to use the bathroom, she kind of rushed behind me and tried to get in the stall with me quite forcefully. I quickly shut and locked the door where I stayed for a while. Then I returned to my seat, really rattled. I tried waking my dad up to tell him but he was trying to sleep.
I don’t know why, but I have never forgotten that incident. The details are burned into my memory and it’s really hard to describe the feelings I felt during those moments. I have no clue what her intentions were and will never know.
57. Mystery Man
I was at work several years ago, and a co-worker had a massive seizure; he later told us he had never had one before. Everyone started freaking out, and a man came over and gently held the guy down because he was in danger of slamming into a desk. When the seizure passed, the man stood up and said, "Ambulance should be here soon, so my work is done" and left.
The weird thing? Nobody had ANY idea who that guy was. We were all so concerned about our cow-worker that we didn't really register that the guy was a stranger until the guy was taken to the hospital. We were in a building that required a key card to enter, and it was closed to the general public. There were only 12 of us in that office, and he wasn't one of us.
So who the heck WAS he?
58. Life Of The Party
My mom was looking at an old photo album and talking about a party that she organized for her co-workers more than 25 years ago. She said that it was nice of me to have helped her there setting up the tables etc. There was just one huge problem. I have zero recollection of that party, nothing, so much so that I thought she was joking.
Then she showed me the pictures, and I’m there! It’s not like I was a kid. I was maybe 19 or 20. I wonder what else my brain erased.
59. Room 237
In the same room of my old house, I have seen a convulsed face floating outside my window and my brother has also seen it. I saw the same face over a number of periods and it would do stuff like smile and float closer and further from the glass. Our youngest brother a few years later complained that he didn't want to play with the boy in his room anymore as he was getting too much blood on his toys.
It was the same room.
60. There’s Someone Out There
A few years ago, I went camping with my dad, my sister, my dad's friend, and my dad's friend's dog. To get where we camped we had to boat across and down a river to where some old woods are. This was proper camping, not a campsite or anything. When we were there, my sister and I decided to play hide and seek. I ran into the woods to find her, and about 30 seconds in I see this medium-sized man, about 50, with long, ungroomed, grey hair just standing there.
I saw him for about half a second because I was running and did a turn and only caught a glimpse. As soon as it happened my heart raced and I felt it deep inside my body. I turned back to see him and he wasn't there. I knew I really saw him because he was in a yellow raincoat that stood out abruptly in the woods. I called out hello a few times because I knew my dad could hear me, and if I got in a situation, him, his friend, and his dog would run over if I screamed help. But he was just gone.
I yelled at my sister to come back and she did straight away. I told everyone, but no one believed me that he was there. Well, at about 3 AM that night, a law enforcement helicopter had flown right down above our camp at the clearing on the edge of the woods. They had a huge bright white light pointing on the camp and my dad and his friend went out to look.
I don't remember what quite happened, as I was tired, so I just lay there on my sleeping bag, a bit worried. I remember the helicopter left like five minutes later. The next morning, we packed up and left. Boated down the river to the cars, and on my dad's friend's car was a small card, like the size of a business card, but it was a light purple with a flowery background.
It had a poem on it and said RIP at the bottom. A small number of days later, my dad's friend saw in the paper that a guy had gone missing right where we went camping by the river, and must have been thought to have drowned or something right where we were camping. Still, no one believes me that I saw the guy next to our camp.
61. Passing to the Other Side
When I was three, we were picking up my grandparents for a Sunday drive. I was sitting in the back seat on the passenger side. My grandfather was sitting in front of me. Suddenly he keeled over, dead of a massive stroke. As they hustled my little sister and me out of the car and into my grandparents' store, I happened to look over my shoulder and plainly saw grandpa walking down the street with two men.
Both were dressed in suits, which made it all the more incongruous that grandpa was wearing the same gray sweater and peaked hat he'd been wearing a moment before in the car. There was nothing particularly creepy about the experience, except that I wouldn't accept that grandpa was dead because, after all, I'd just seen him walking down the street.
Naturally, this didn't go over very well. But I loved my grandpa, I didn't want him to be dead, and I knew what I had seen! When our family doctor arrived to pronounce grandpa dead, my mother asked me if I would take his word for it. We had a very good, trusting relationship with our doctor, so I said that I would. The doctor assured me that my grandfather had in fact passed on.
But he was the only grown-up who didn't treat me like I was crazy. He listened respectfully as I told him what I had seen, and he suggested that maybe the men in the suits were angels. This seemed reasonable. Problem solved. But to this day I can still see grandpa walking down the street with those two men. And no matter what my parents tried to tell me, it wasn't just a guy who looked like grandpa coincidentally wearing exactly the same clothes he'd been wearing in the car.
It was him.
62. Phantom Family
For YEARS there was a picture of a family sitting on the table in my grandma's house. The picture would be taken down every now and then and a new portrait would go up. It was a portrait of some extended cousins—I don't know their names. One day, my mom and I were in a grocery store and I spotted that family. I pointed them out to my mom and she had no CLUE who I was talking about.
They weren't cousins. She had no idea who they were. I told her they were in a picture on grandma's table. She said there never WAS a picture on that table. Later that same day, we had to go to grandma's to drop something off. When we got there, I went to the table, and the picture was gone! I was there less than a week prior. I remember that picture!
When mom went to the bathroom, I asked grandma about the picture and even she had no idea what I was talking about! To this day, TO THIS VERY DAY, this mystery still bugs me.
63. Just Passing by
When I was about eight or nine, my brother and I were lying in bed ready to go to sleep when all of a sudden our room illuminated with a bunch of flashing lights. It was probably around 10 PM at the time and we were terrified. The lights went on for a good minute and afterward, we immediately looked out the window to see what it was, but we saw nothing.
No car, no random person playing a prank on us, nothing. So we tan to our mom and tell her what happened, but she didn't believe us. She just tells us to go to bed and stop making stuff up. To this day, my brother and I vividly remember this, but no one ever believes us.
64. Glitch in the Matrix
Maybe less creepy and more just flat out weird, but one Christmas morning, many years ago, my friend and I decided to meet up at a park to hang out. Now, this park has a clear view of a very major highway and unsurprisingly, it was empty. Maybe one or two cars every seven minutes or so. However, at one point cars just stopped coming entirely for like a 30 minute period and out of the blue, a horse-drawn carriage made its way down the highway.
My friend and I kind of looked at each other to confirm that we were both seeing it, and yes it, was real. Mind you, this is SoCal, so this isn't a common occurrence at all. Still, we brushed it off as maybe a quince celebration or something and got up to start walking back to my house. Suddenly, we look up and a parachuter is dropping down a decent distance away.
No plane in sight, and no logical landing location. We both stare at him for a while before continuing to walk. A few seconds later, we both look back to see how our man up there is doing and he's gone. We confirm with each other that yes, we both saw him, and yes, he seemed to have disappeared. As we walk, puzzled, a car drives by.
No problem there, we were in a neighborhood at that point. However, he turned a corner and we heard nothing but pure silence. We were maybe 10 feet from that corner, so logically, we should have at least heard it go into the distance, but we didn't. It turned the corner and was just gone. We ran to see it, and there was no trace.
I'm pretty sure we were in some sort of alternate reality there.
65. Hide and Seek
I work the night shift at a nursing home. At my first job—five years ago—the building used to be a school in the 50s, so the set up is already eerie. Anyway, there was the usual noises heard in the distance and cold chills every now and then. The faucets in the rooms used to start running water randomly and the lights would turn themselves off and on, but the last straw was when one night I felt someone tap me on the shoulder.
When I turned around I saw a silhouette pressed up against the privacy curtain and two skinny grey legs in blue slippers at the bottom of the curtain. When I moved the privacy curtain—thinking a resident had wandered into the room—no one was there, even though I could clearly see the outline of the body when I grabbed the curtain to move it.
I called in and quit the next day. Me calling DON's private number: “Hey this is so-and-so. I don’t think I'm coming in tonight. Actually, I'm not coming in tonight. I'm not coming back in any night. I quit. DON: “Can, can I ask why?” Me: “Uh. No.” Then I hung up. The facility I work in currently is down the street from that place and one of my current coworkers used to work there.
She has a similar story.
66. Monster in the Closet
When I was seven or eight, I would have a recurring nightmare that one of my dolls came to life, played with me, and then would try to pull me into my closet with her. I’d follow her into the closet at first, but then she’d show me this little door at the back of the closet, and my heart would start to race. I don’t know what it was about that door, but I knew something bad would happen if I went through it.
I’d start to struggle and try to pull away, but the doll was too strong and would start pulling me through the door. At this point in the dream, I’d always wake up screaming. The worst part was, I had night terrors, so sometimes I’d wake up standing next to my closet. Every night before bed, I’d make my parents make sure there wasn’t a little door at the back of my closet. There never was.
Anyway, I was talking to my mom the other day and this dream came up. I’m laughing about it and how ridiculously paranoid I was about dolls and that closet, but my mom gets really quiet. She tells me the creepy part of that dream wasn’t the doll—it was the fact that there used to be a little door at the back of the closet, but when I was one-year-old, they remodeled the house and put a wall where the door used to be.
There’s no way I could have remembered that door, but years later, I kept dreaming about it. None of my friends believe this story, but I swear it’s true.
67. Time Literally Flies by
I used to have a buddy who lived in the same neighborhood, a few streets over. One night, we were having a couple of beers in his backyard while playing cards. I had some things to do the next morning, so just before 10 I said my goodbyes and shoved off. It was a short walk—MAYBE 15 minutes door-to-door—so I never drove.
Anyway, it was a nice night and a totally uneventful trip. But when I got home, my roommate was coming out the front door, coffee in hand, and dressed for work. He gave me a funny look and said he thought I was asleep since my truck was in the driveway. I told him where I'd been and asked why he was going in to work at night.
That's when he kind of laughed and asked if I was drunk. We stared at each other for a minute and then he told me it was just after FIVE IN THE MORNING and he was going in just like he usually did. In my entire life, I'd never felt more confused than I did in that moment. I could tell he was dead serious, but I KNEW I had just left my friend's house.
I checked my phone and sure enough—five something in the AM. My roommate left for work. I paced circles in the living room for a bit then called the friend whose house I'd just left. He groggily answered and confirmed I'd left at 10 the previous evening. I have no idea what happened during those seven hours of my life and it gives me chills to think about it all these years later.
I wasn't drunk, I wasn't tired, no one could have slipped anything in either of the two Coors Lights I'd had. No known medical conditions that would have caused me to blackout, and nothing has happened like it since. I just don't know what happened to that time.
68. Friend Bear
Okay, so my daughter is now almost two and has long since moved into her own room. We have one of those video monitor things where you can see/hear the baby on this little TV thing or you can turn the picture off and just get sound. So one night maybe a month ago I'm sitting in bed, scrolling through Reddit or something, and I start hearing my daughter babbling to herself. Now, it's really late, like one or two in the morning. Much later than she is ever awake unless something is wrong and she is sick or cutting a tooth or something.
So I turn the picture on the monitor on and see her standing up in her crib facing sort of diagonally away from the camera. I can see her hands in front of her but only like half of her face. Now is a good time to mention that we have been teaching her ASL since she was about three months old, and she has been responding and conversing in sign since about ten months. I can see her signing things like "nice," "silly," and "fun" and, oddly enough, "no," "don't like" and "bear." Of course being the good and loving mother I am (and really not wanting to deal with an overly sleepy baby in the morning) I get up to see what the heck she is doing.
When I get to her room she is still standing up and signing/babbling towards the far corner of her room. I ask her what she is doing and who she is talking to and she signs/says (as best as she can) "friend" which she does with her whole hands and not just her index fingers and signs "bear" again. I tell her that no, see Bear (who is actually one of her stuffed toys) is in bed behind her not in the corner of the room but she just giggles at me and signs/says "silly" and "mommy."
I can see she is wide awake so I sit down in the rocker next to her bed and try to figure out what woke her up but all she will tell me is "friend" and "bear" and occasionally duck down like she is hiding and making shhh noises. I finally get fed up and ask her who Friend Bear is and her response literally gave me chills because she doesn't speak well yet but she managed to say, very clearly and with the most serious face a 20-month-old can pull off, "No name, no name, shhhhh."
Well now I am well and truly freaked out so I tell her to ask "No Name Friend Bear" to go home because it is too late to play and I did what any good loving mother would do. I gave her a pacifier, went back to my room, turned off the monitor entirely and hid under the covers in my room where my good and loving husband would protect me from nameless invisible bears.
69. Be Careful What You Wish For
I told work that I had to go out of town for a week for a family member's funeral. Completely fictitious. In reality, I just wanted time off to hang out at the luxury home my friend was house sitting, which had a hot tub, full bar, etc. I almost immediately regretted it. The day my "vacation" started, I got a call that this exact relative had passed and they were going out of town for the funeral and expected me to go with them.
70. I’ve Got A Bad Feeling About This
When I was seven or eight, I used to spend Friday nights at my grandma’s house. She spoiled the heck out of me, so I loved it. One night, though, I suddenly had a strange urge to call my mom. I dialed my phone number—I mean, I knew my own number, right? A woman answered, and I suddenly blurted out, “Mom come and get me.”
I have no idea why, to this day, that came out of my mouth. Like I said, I loved it there, and up until that moment had no thoughts of being picked up. Anyways, the person on the other end starts to sound panicky and says, “Where are you??!” Then it hits me that this isn’t my mom, so I just hang up and go back to watching television.
So weird, and while it seems so minor, it’s stuck with me for 30 years.
71. Don’t Look Away
When I was a kid, I used to stay at my grandparents' house a lot. They’ve had that house for as long as my mom has been alive, possibly even longer. All I know is that the history of the property is still unknown to this day. Anyways, I used to stay in my mom's old childhood room—it was called the purple room due to the purple carpet and the lavender wallpaper.
It was a pretty big room with a queen-sized bed in the middle and a humongous window right next to it. During the summer, I would frequently stay at that house and spend a lot of time in that room. One night, I vividly remember waking up late at night, probably one or two in the morning, and seeing a puppet show outside my window. I wish I was making this up.
They were hand/sock puppets and it looked like it was only performed by one or two people. It was only a shadow of this performance, which threw me off, so of course I assumed I was still a little tired and totally out of it and imagining the whole thing. I decided to brush it off my shoulder and ignore it. Oh man, do I regret that.
As soon as I turned over on my right side, there in the doorway, was a large black figure. It was pitch black out in the hallway, but I could clearly see a figure standing there. My stomach sank and my heart started beating quickly. I was wide awake now. I blinked a few times and I swear every time I did, it got a little bit closer.
When it got arm's length away from me, that’s when I felt my heart stop beating completely and my body turning cold. I swear I could see my breath because of how cold it was. I was able to muster up a scream that woke up both of my grandparents and brother from their deep slumber. My grandma was the first one to come into my room, but as soon as she flicked the lights on, it was gone. Never to be seen again.
I was sobbing and trying to tell her what I saw, but she just kept stroking my hair and saying I was just having a bad dream. I know that wasn’t a dream and what I saw was real. I also believe that this thing that I saw as a child followed me when I moved to a different state. I was about six or seven when this happened and I’m 16 now.
To this day, no one believes me.
72. What Did Jennifer Do to You?
When I was about 15 years old or so, I went upstairs in the early evening. The light was hitting the window at a low angle, and covered the wall over my bed with yellow light. The reflected light contained the shadow of words, and spelled "Execute Jennifer." I went to get my sister to show her, and the message was gone.
She didn't know what to say, and didn't believe me. I told her that I didn't know anyone called Jennifer and we agreed that that was probably for the best. We laughed it off, but I couldn't figure out how the words got there. The best guess I could make was that there's a bus shelter across the road with a large ad space behind reflective Plexiglas, and that maybe words from that advert were reflected onto the wall.
Maybe my brain misread the words as something sinister. I've always had a logical outlook on the world, but I never figured out what that message was about or how it got there.
73. The Haunting of Two Minds
I was dating a guy in college. His mother was a pharmacist by day and into stones, crystals, and tarot cards by night. She lived about 20 minutes from our college campus and we frequently went to visit her and spend weekends at her condo/his old house. It was nice and made me feel like I had a home away from home. One night, like every other night, we watched TV, did the deed, and fell asleep in his old room. I woke up in the middle of the night to pee.
I go out and in the middle of the hallway, I see this woman dressed in red with long blond hair—but she didn’t have a face. No distinct features that I could remember. She was just kind of...glowing? It was like she was in the sun, just bright, but the hallway was pitch black. That's not the worst part though. I obviously freaked out, skipped going to the bathroom, and went to wake up my BF.
He woke up startled and told me he had had a nightmare. He said he was dreaming of a woman being chased by men and described her to a T—a woman in red with long blonde hair. I told him what I saw and we were literally shaking in fear. We didn’t sleep that night. I don’t know if his mother summoned someone or something.
I don’t know if I even believe that. But the place was not homey that night, or the following morning. Maybe I was just spooked, but I never went back to that house, and we broke up shortly after.
74. Didn’t Sign up for This
As a Marine, I used to have the graveyard patrol shift at the Beirut Memorial. Part of the memorial is dedicated to a veteran's cemetery. Oddly enough, I never got freaked out being completely alone in a remote cemetery, in the middle of the night, surrounded by dense woods on all sides. It was actually kind of peaceful, to be honest.
However, one night I was patrolling near the perimeter fence where some of the oldest headstones are when I heard the sound of a woman humming. I followed the sound and noticed a light glowing through the vines and brush of a large tree. As I approached, I could literally feel my hair beginning to lift, as if there was an electric current in the air.
I pushed aside the brush and what I saw nearly took my breath away. It was an old, weathered headstone with a large cross etched into the marble. Only the cross was glowing a bright, vivid blue, like a neon bulb. The humming was also suddenly much louder and had a weird plurality to it, like it was coming from hundreds of voices at once.
Needless to say, I freaked out. I screamed like a scared little girl and sprinted back to the parking lot. I radioed the guard who was supposed to relieve me and forced him to come early, then spent the rest of my shift in the cab of his truck. I don't think he believed me, but he stayed in his truck and didn't go out on patrol until the sun was fully up.
A few days later, I worked up the nerve to return to the grave—during the day, of course. As I suspected, in the light of day it was a completely mundane headstone. There was no name, only the aforementioned cross. I ran my hands over the stone and checked to see if maybe there was some sort of hidden light source or solar panel, but no, it was just plain, solid, unremarkable stone. The humming was gone, too.
I eventually returned to my normal shift, but never again experienced anything out of the ordinary. I never learned whose grave that was, either, but I find myself thinking about it from time to time. It certainly sounds absurd when I say it out loud, and I suppose it could have been a hallucination or a trick of my tired brain, but I don't believe it was.
I think it was real. A ghost or spirit of some sort, thought I don't think it was malevolent at all.
75. Careful What You Wish For
Ghost story time. I was living with a few of my friends a year and a half ago and we’re all pretty religious—at least two of us work in religion. We were talking about how we didn’t believe in ghosts or demons, at least in the sense that we couldn’t see them if they were real. We started talking about how if we saw one it would change our perspective entirely.
I said out loud, “If something is here, I wish it would just show us.” Two nights later, I’m sound asleep and have the most vivid, brutal nightmare I’ve ever had. Long story short, I was in my childhood house, we were getting robbed, and the burglar shot my father, only it was me, I was the burglar. My father and I had a very strained relationship and the detail of the shooting woke me up in tears. I mean I was SOBBING.
I looked at the foot of my bed and saw a man sitting on his heels staring at me. It looked like he was 80 years old but never hit puberty—that’s as best I can describe it. His face looked kind but his eyes looked so wicked it struck terror into my soul. He almost looked curious, but morbidly so. He was wearing clothes that looked like he was a newspaper salesman from 1890s New York.
I only saw him for a split second and he was gone. The wild thing is I got ALL OF THAT DETAIL in just a split second, like he wanted me to remember him. HERE’S THE CRAZY PART. So I was spooked, right? I went into our living room and watched YouTube and some Twitch streams for a bit until I convinced myself I was just half asleep and still spooked.
I lay back in bed and the moment my head hits the pillow my roommate sits straight up in bed—still asleep—points at the foot of my bed and says, “Hey, who is that”? I LOST MY FREAKING MIND. I literally drove home at 3 AM and told my parents through tears I wanted to stay home until summer. I stayed at home for a week or so and then went back.
My roommate started having night terrors after that, but we moved soon after. I’ve never been so scared in all of my life.
76. Grim Precognition
My great uncle used to have dreams that made him certain that he was going to die before his junior year of high school—but that wasn't the most disturbing part. For some reason, he was sure it would be a family member who would take his life. Then, the summer before his junior year, he and his older brothers were out for a summer drive, in a convertible, in the 50s, with no seatbelts in the back of the car. His older brother took a turn too hard and too fast and rolled the car.
They all lived—except the youngest brother. Then, when they were going through his notebooks after his funeral, they found drawings of the church where the funeral had been held. This church was several towns over, and he had never been there, so there was no way he could have drawn a picture of it. He not only knew he would die and that a family member would kill him, he even knew the Church where his funeral would be held.
Velyndrel
77. Peeping Goddess
I was sitting on the toilet facing a huge statue of a Greek goddess in my grandma’s house. My cousin was looking in the mirror applying make-up, and we were just chatting—when all of a sudden the statue started moving. The sound of it getting dragged across the floor was terrifying, and we froze. It was impossible for it to move because it was so heavy, and yet it turned around so that it looked straight at me.
Needless to say, we ran out of the room without even flushing or taking our stuff.
78. Seeing Double
I was 15 and on my way to school with a bunch of friends. The school was directly down a steep hill, and we were all walking behind a college student with a very bright colored scarf that was whipping in the wind. It was just past seven in the morning and even though it was early and I was tired, I was alert. People were chatting around me as we continued to walk behind the college student. Everything was normal.
Then, all of a sudden, the student hesitated for a second—and then there were TWO of her. They were exactly alike down to the finest detail. One veered left to cross the road to the bus stop, while the other continued down the street as she had been doing before. The colorful scarf whipped in the wind from both copies. Her hair moved exactly as though it were being windswept.
I stopped dead and felt the blood drain from my face as the two mirror images continued along their paths. I was shaken out of it by a friend who grabbed my shoulder. When I glanced back, the image of the student walking in front was gone, and only the one by the bus stop remained. Never seen anything like that before or since.
79. Violent Vision
I started getting a really heavy, eerie feeling in my bedroom when we were living in an old house. I could feel some kind of energy coming distinctly from one corner of my room. I don't know how long it was there, but eventually, I got used to it. I figured that maybe I was just scaring myself. Then, one night, I lay down and closed my eyes and after a little bit, as I was starting to drift off, my body tensed.
I started to panic. I couldn't move or open my eyes, and that feeling from the corner of my room got stronger and stronger. I felt a dip in the bed at my side and then, for a moment, nothing happened. I thought that maybe if I pretended to be asleep, whatever it was would go away. And then suddenly, the feeling of hands around my throat made me cold with fear.
I couldn't breathe, but I also couldn't move. My lungs burned, tears were rolling down my face, and I could feel myself starting to pass out. And then, just as suddenly as it had started, it stopped. I didn't move a muscle until I finally fell asleep. The next day when I looked in the mirror, there was bruising all around the front and sides of my neck.
80. Time Keeps On Slipping, Slipping, Slipping….
When I was about 12, I was swimming at a public pool and my grandparents had told me to be back at their house in an hour or two. I checked the time, and it was 2:37. I still had some time left, so I continued swimming. What felt like about an hour later, I decided to check the time again; I asked a lifeguard, and he said it was 2:37. It was impossible; time had to have passed, a lot of time!
This is where it gets creepier; he gave me the most nerve-wracking smirk I’ve ever seen after telling me the time. It felt like he was saying that he knew something that I didn’t. I shrugged it off as a weird event…until I asked him the same question what I estimated was about 20 minutes later. He gave me the same response.
I thought he had to be messing with me, so I went in the change room and checked the time myself; it was 2:37. Just as I thought I was losing my mind, my digital watch switched to 2:38. Then time continued as normal.
81. Eye-Phone
My grandma called one day. She said, "Did you just call me a minute ago?" My mom hadn't. Grandma then continued to explain how she had just gotten a call from us, and when she answered, nobody was on the other end of the line. However, she could hear everything that was happening in the house. My dad was watching TV, my mother was vacuuming the rug in front of him, and they were arguing over something at the same time.
She could also hear me playing whatever computer game I was into at the time. On top of all this, she said that she heard a sound "like paper being folded" right next to the phone. The strangest part of all this is that it just happened to occur on the exact same day that my Mom's aunt passed on.
82. Maybe Ghosts Are Afraid of the Dark?
I lived in a 200-year-old house. One night, my mom made sure all of the lights were off before she left the house—only to glance in the rear-view mirror as she drove away and see that the house was ablaze with light. Every single fixture in the interior and exterior was turned on. She also noticed a very strong smell of cigar smoke in my room occasionally, but never saw anyone outside having one.
It was strong enough that they repainted in case it was coming from the walls, but that didn’t help. One day, while talking to someone at her church, she learned that a previous owner—who smoked cigars—had passed on in the house.
83. Friendly Ghost
My brother and I were home alone one night watching TV. My mother was working a night shift and my father was out. When he came home, he pushed the door ajar and poked his head through to say hello. We both turned around and said hello back, then he closed the door. 30 seconds after that, another man opened the door to say hello.
He was pale and had bright white hair; we assumed a friend of my father had come back to the house too. We both turned around again and said hello back, and the man closed the door. About five minutes later, I headed into the kitchen where my father was making dinner. I was expecting to see his friend again, but I saw that he was alone making dinner and assumed his friend was upstairs in the bathroom.
I asked my father who his friend was. “What friend?” I mentioned the man we had seen. He looked at me like I was crazy. He said, “I came back home on my own.”
84. Echoes From The Past
My family went out for the day and as we got back, the neighbor waved us over to talk. She asked why my baby sister had been laughing so much. My mother asked what she meant, and the neighbor said, “Natalie was laughing really loud earlier, and for quite a while. I was laughing at her laughing!” My mother then told her that we had been out all day and that the house was empty.
I began researching the house, and it turns out that the land the house stands on used to be an old children’s home, which was closed due to negligence and lack of care for the children. That might explain the little girl’s laugh…I was always skeptical about the paranormal until I moved into that house. I am now a 100% firm believer. I never want to go back in that house again.
85. The Fatal Aura
When I was in high school, my girlfriend’s parents would let me stay overnight on the weekends so long as I slept in the RV that was parked in back of the house. I had done it multiple times, and my girlfriend would come sit outside with me for a while until she got tired, and then she would go inside and I would listen to my Walkman while I tried to fall asleep.
I remember one night I was having trouble falling asleep. This wasn't so unusual for me, but as I lay there, I started to notice an unfamiliar background noise. When I removed my headphones, I realized that it sounded like people outside the RV were having a loud discussion. Then the number of voices started to multiply and multiply and get louder and louder until it was unbearable.
I searched round and round, peering out of the windows, but nobody was there. I was very shaken at this point, and I decided to run into the house and sleep in the living room and try to explain myself in the morning. Problem was, every time I got about 6 feet away from the RV, there would be a flash of white and I would open my eyes and find myself back in the RV. Now, I was nearly having a panic attack, so I called my girlfriend on the phone.
She could hear how terrified I was, so she told me she was coming outside to get me. I heard the back sliding door of her house open, I heard her walk across the deck, down the steps, across the garden stones. I finally heard her hand fumble on the RV door, but when it swung open…no one was there. Now I was pretty much in tears when suddenly I felt the presence of something behind me.
I turned around and found this massive red aura hovering there. I was overcome with this immense sense of dread and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I remember feeling like this energy was draining me, like absorbing my life force if that makes any sense. I dropped to my knees and realized that if I didn’t break free real fast, I was most certainly going to die.
I don’t know where I found the strength from, but I willed myself back to my feet and slammed the RV door open and bolted for the house. This time I actually got inside. I hollered for my girlfriend, and she came downstairs with her mom to much confusion. I explained everything that had happened, getting especially angry that my girlfriend never came outside like she promised.
She said that we never spoke on the phone and she had no idea what I was talking about, but when we compared our phones, mine showed a 1:25 am conversation completed to phone while hers showed nothing. That's when she and her mom started taking me seriously and began to look quite scared themselves. The rest of the night was uneventful, except that I couldn’t sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I would see a small circle of intensely burning white light.
86. Dark Doppelganger
I was having a tense conversation with someone who I was close to years ago. The conversation quickly devolved into a passive-aggressive fight that ended with the other person getting in the car and driving away. As I started heading back inside, the other person came back, got out of the car, and started our conversation again. Except this time, something was very, very wrong.
Their tone of voice was totally different and their stance was different and the feeling in the air was completely off. I don’t know how else to explain it. As the conversation progressed, the other person started saying some nasty and mean things that were completely out of character. I said, “This isn’t like you, Emma.” Oh my god, their response.
They said, “What makes you think that I’m Emma?” I remember continuing the conversation and talking to the “person” for a long time, but I don’t remember anything specific. I do remember becoming more and more alarmed and knowing something wasn’t right. Finally, I told the person to go home. They complied and left.
I went back inside and started telling my sibling about the situation when the doorbell rang after maybe 2-3 minutes had passed. It was Emma coming back to apologize for the original fight. They had been driving around town for a long time and didn’t want to go home leaving things unresolved. I asked why they had said some of the things from the last conversation, and they looked at me like I was crazy.
They had no idea what I was talking about. Totally could have been lying, but that whole situation just felt dark. Scared the heck out of me.
87. Shadow Play
Something happened to me last night. I got home from work very early in the morning, 2:30 am. My house has an entryway or mudroom before you actually get into the main living area. I open the front door, step inside, close the front door and proceed to try and find the key to get through the next door to get into my house properly.
So the only light in this entryway is through the glass on the front door, the rest of the room is completely black. I can barely see my hands in front of my face. All of a sudden, I start to hear this...buzzing/vibrating?...noise behind me off to the right. House is old, so maybe just weird house noises. I’m still looking for the key when I notice that the noise is getting louder, closer, and it has risen in pitch to something as if a woman was humming loudly. Maybe it's just ringing in my ear. But that was just the beginning of the nightmare.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see a shadow that I thought was from light reflecting outside. Nope, it’s moving towards me and creeping along the wall...that's when I noticed the vibrating noise was also getting closer to me, and it seemed to be coming in the same direction as the now-moving shadow. I'm desperately trying to open this darn door and when I finally do, the noise stops, the shadow disappears, and I'm hoping it was all in my head.
88. The Imprint Of Life
My grandfather passed when I was eight and my little brother was two or three-ish. He had this big Lazy Boy chair in the living room that he always planted himself in. Everyone knew this chair was "grandpa's chair." Anyway, we went down to my grandparent's house in Florida for a long weekend to attend the funeral.
We're all chatting the first night there in the living room, and my mom was sitting in the chair. My little brother goes up to my mom and says, "Grandpa wants his chair back." My mom asks him where grandpa is, thinking the little boy probably didn't understand what was happening, to which he responds, "He's right behind you." My mom BOLTED off that sofa immediately.
89. The Trauma Ward
I was on call at a hospital, and as I was going to leave for the night, I walked the long, empty hallway to return my pager. As I returned down that hall, a terrifying sight made me stop in my tracks. I noticed a woman limping down the hall toward me, sobbing and crying, "Help me." Mind you, it was 2 am, and no one should have been in that part of the hospital. When I blinked, she was gone.
90. Intruder Alert
I shared a room with a guy in college who was a musician. He’d stay out late almost every night and come home around 3 or 4 in the morning. Our room was a straight shot through the kitchen from the front door. One night, I woke up to the bedroom door opening and figured it was just my roommate coming home after a gig.
I thought it was strange that he turned the light on when coming in. He knew I was a light sleeper and would normally use his phone’s light to shine around the room if he was looking for something while I was asleep. My bed was twin-sized and positioned against the wall connecting the bedroom to the kitchen. When he came in, I was facing the wall.
I kept my eyes closed and pretended I was still asleep because I didn’t feel like having a conversation while I was still half-asleep. I heard him go to his side of the room, opposite of my bed, and rustle around his desk and dresser looking for something. Sometimes he would grab some clothes for the next day and go stay at a buddy’s house, so I wasn’t concerned.
Then I felt him start reaching under my bed. I kept a few things under there, but he would normally ask before straight-up taking anything of mine. At that point, I was really confused and annoyed by all this, so I made it a point to passive aggressively roll over on my other side and face the middle of the room and the direction from where he was reaching, just so he knew I was angry that he was ruining my beauty sleep.
Then I heard nothing. But I could feel he shot up from under the bed and was just standing there. I never opened my eyes, but I figured he would either apologize for waking me up or something. But he never said a word. He just stood there. After probably two minutes with the light still on, I heard him leave the room and go to the kitchen.
I opened my eyes after a couple more minutes because he left the light on in the bedroom. He wasn’t in the kitchen, but he had pulled a knife from the knife block and left it on the table. I checked around the house and couldn’t find him, but quickly realized my Xbox, book bag, wallet, etc. were all gone. He’d taken them all. Or rather, someone else had.
I called my roommate to see if he had been home…but he was miles away at a party. He still had his house keys and never gave them to anyone else prior. I must have accidentally left the door unlocked that evening, which was the one time someone decided to check the knob. The authorities never followed up with me after that night, so I doubt they ever caught the guy. I can’t imagine what would have happened if I ever did open my eyes and see that guy standing there or if I chased him out to the kitchen.
91. The Phantom Intruder
When I was in college, I housesat for my parents. I’m a bit of a scaredy-cat, so I locked every door leading up to the bedroom when I went to bed at night. I had the weirdest dream that someone unlocked each door and turned on every light, and I felt cold and woke up to my dog barking. Sure enough, all of the lights in the house were on and every door was open and unlocked.
My dog wouldn’t stop barking in the hallway, but there was nothing there. I sat in the shower with my dog and phone the rest of night, scared out of my wits. To this day, I still have no explanation for that night's events.
92. The Bloody-Faced Man
One afternoon in college, I came back from classes and decided to sit on the couch and have a snack. After that, I just passed out. I had a nightmare of some bloody-faced demon thing screaming in my ear at the top of its lungs. I then woke up and went about the rest of my day. My roommate comes back later that night, and goes into his room as I’m sitting in the main living area.
At some point, he lets out this random startled scream. Panicking, I run down the hall to see what’s going on. His words chilled me to the bone. He looks at me and goes, “I swear to god, someone with a bloody face just walked from your bedroom into the bathroom.” I never told him about my nightmare I had earlier in the day. After that, I didn’t sleep for two days straight.
93. Open Door Policy
I used to work at a 24hr Subway. Well, one day I was doing the dishes, and my co-worker was cleaning the toaster oven and bread oven. Out of nowhere, around 3:30 am, I heard our door chime go off. Out of habit I say, "Welcome to Subway" as I turn around. But nobody's there. My co-worker's gone too. I thought "Okay, maybe he hopped the counter and went outside."
Heading back to the sink to finish the dishes, I hear the door chime again. Nobody. Checked the bathrooms. Nobody. "What...the...heck." I ignore the dishes, and stand at the front counter, eyeing the doors. A couple minutes later, my co-worker comes through the back door where we get our deliveries. "Where'd you go?" I asked him, turning towards the back door area.
"To take out the trash," he replies. Okay, I think, I'm just imagining things. But nope, just then, the door chimes again. We both turn around to see nobody there, but this time the door was wide open. But here's the freakiest part: Our doors are weighted so they'll close on their own if you let go of them. Door stayed open for a couple minutes as we stared...Then suddenly slammed.
Not a windy night, and our doors wouldn't even stay open like that on the windiest of days. Have no idea what caused this, or why it happened on that particular night, but after I got a different job, I was told it never happened again. Told my boss about the incident and we all looked at the cameras. Nobody could explain it.
94. The Vanishing
I dropped my mug onto the floor accidentally one day. It should have been no big deal, but it turned into my weirdest "glitch in the matrix" moment. I heard no noise when it hit the floor, and when I went to pick it up, it was gone. I honestly went to bed and pondered what happened and slept feeling incredibly uncomfortable. I never did find the mug; it remained missing even days later. Still bothers me to this day.
95. Father Knows Best
March 2015. My father had just passed a month ago. I wasn’t sleeping well and I would stay up later and later every night. When he was alive, my father always used to scold me if I stayed up so late because it would ruin my sleep schedule and affect my work, y'know, just standard parenting stuff. So I'm thinking about this one night when I couldn't sleep. It’s about 2:30 am, and I’m watching YouTube on my PS4 to distract myself.
Then, the power in the house flickers. I didn't realize it at the time, but that was the start of the strangest night of my life. I check the window, there's no rain or wind or anything. I figured somebody hit a pole somewhere. Couple minutes later, power goes out for a second, then comes right back on. Nothing was affected, which is weird because when power goes out, the electronics usually reset. So I check the window again, but still see nothing happening outside.
A couple minutes later, power goes out for almost a whole minute. From the couch, I can see the streetlight outside is still lit, as well as the other houses on the street. Power comes back on and EVERYTHING is still as it was. Video continues where it left off, clocks haven’t reset, nothing. It’s now 2:37 am. I audibly said “ok” and went to bed.
Next morning, I wake up for work. The clock on the oven says 11 am. My phone says 7:23. It was around 11 when my father left the house the day he passed. Fast forward to January of this year, the third anniversary of my father’s passing, I can’t sleep. I’m upstairs at my NEW home, watching Netflix. Power flickers and goes out.
I immediately said “ok I’m going to bed.” Power comes back on. Next morning, getting ready for work, oven clock says 11:41am. Dad doesn’t like when I stay up too late.
96. The Disembodied Voice
A lady’s voice was coming from my closet and asking for help. My closet door was cracked and she said, “Help me. I see you through the cracks.” Every synonym for the word scared was coursing through my body. I went and checked to see if there was a woman in need of help, but nothing was in there but my clothes and shoes.
97. The Others
My mom and older sister describe how I used to randomly start crying and asking where my mom was, even when she was right in front of me. When my mother would try to comfort me by saying she was right there, I would shout for my other mom. I would then describe this person, who apparently always held a bloody hammer. The Red Lady. They said it scared them out of their wits, but one day when I was two years old, they tried to ask me about it and I couldn't remember anything.
98. Private Tutor
When my son was about two or three, he wouldn't go to sleep so I let him into my bed. My husband was asleep, so I told my boy he had to look at his books quietly while I read mine. He was good for a bit, but then he suddenly started reading the book. Actually reading the words out loud. Slowly. He couldn't read and it was a newer book we hadn't read to him yet. It wasn't memorization. I asked him how he knew what it said and he replied: "my friend John is telling me." Scared the heck out of me.
99. I Can See It in Your Eyes
My boyfriend’s younger brother and I were taking a bike ride down the street to the shops late one afternoon. As we get onto the main road, we notice a dude across the street heading in the opposite direction. He is walking with a limp, his head is bowed, and he’s got a plastic bag in his hand. We're only a few meters away from him when he crosses the street onto our side.
As the bro rides past him, this stranger lifts his head up and smiles in his direction as they pass each other. I'm a little while behind, so I don't pay too much attention to this—that is, until the bro stops, turns around, and gives me a funny look, just as this guy is passing him by. I still don't think too much of it at this point, assuming that he had just stopped to let me catch up.
As soon as I myself passed the stranger and made eye contact with him, I realized that this was not the case. When the stranger looked over and nodded at me, I saw nothing in his eyes. When I say nothing, I mean like black pits where his eyes should have been, or just an eyeball that looked entirely black. I don’t know how else to describe it.
When I finally catch up to the bro, we stop around the corner and he says to me "Did you see that???" "You mean his eyes?!" I asked. "Yeah, it looked like they weren't even there!" he replied. We then kind of sat there for a while processing what we had both just seen. Had the bro not related the same feeling and experience to me as I had felt when the stranger looked at me, I doubt I would have ever thought anything of it.
I probably would have just assumed it was the light angles playing tricks on me or some such thing. It was a sunny afternoon, so glare certainly could have played a part. He could've been wearing contacts, I don't know. But none of those explanations feel like they fit. We got home later on and told everybody what had happened, but no one believed us. They still don't to this day.
100. Ronald McSecrets
This one time when I was little, my dad woke me up at like 2 am said "Get ready, we're going to McDonald's.” I was so confused and kept asking why, but he wouldn't answer anything besides, "because" or "to have fun.” The rest of my family—my two brothers, my sister, and my mom—didn't come with us and they were still asleep when we left.
The play place was closed, and we just kind of sat there for an hour or so eating, then went back home. To this day, I still have NO idea why he frantically needed me out of the house, and he swears he doesn't remember that happening, but the whole thing was SO weird that I kept the toy that I got from the Happy Meal to remember it by, and I still have it to this day…
It's my only proof of this weird freaking night that my dad (almost scarily) hurried me to McDonald’s at 2 am. I have two guesses why. First, my sister pooped the bed and they were worried I'd make fun of her. Or maybe they somehow noticed something like rats in my room? Were they worried I wouldn't be able to sleep if I knew that there were rats and they needed an hour or so to get them out???
Either way, a very strange night that my dad refuses to tell me the truth about, which only makes me think it's something much worse. Like. I'm 23 now. If he said "Yeah, your sister pooped the bed and we didn't want you to know," I'd have been like cool, nice, good thinking. But he REFUSES to believe that it happened at all. WHAT HAPPENED.
101. Calling All Angels
After I totaled my car, a man with burn scars all over his face and hands came up to my window. He asked if I was ok and then came and sat in the passenger seat. He said, “I need you to know that everything happens for a reason.” I said, “I know.” The next thing I know, I’m talking to the other driver and the authorities, and the guy is just gone. No one else saw him.
